Panui a te Tumuaki
Can you believe it? We are in Week 8 already. There are two more weeks left of the school year and what a year it has been. We have had so much activities in the past few weeks and I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the events that have taken place. We look forward to the coming days before we break up next Friday, the 16th of December.
TUU PONO STAND AT TAINUI PRIMARY SCHOOLS KAPA HAKA REGIONALS
It has been a few weeks now since Tuu Pono kapa haka roopu stood for the very first time at the Tainui Primary Schools Kapa Haka Regionals. This event was held at Te Wharekura o Rakaumangamanga on Saturday the 12th of November. Our kura was one of 15 kura who competed at this auspicious event. The 15 schools were made up of Kura Kaupapa Maaori, Intermediates and English medium kura like Koromatua.
VERY PROUD
Our tamariki looked amazing and sounded amazing. It was a very proud moment for me as the tumuaki, as a mama and a member of our haapori. Many whanau came to watch the live performance and many more watched the competition online.
TUU PONO 11th Overall
Tuu Pono came 11th overall and although we didn't qualify for the National Kapa Haka event, we are so proud of our tamariki and their efforts. We are looking forward to preparing for the next regionals in 2024.
THANK YOU
I want to acknowledge the combined efforts of Matua Tahi, Whaea Tish, Whaea Esta, Whaea Raharu and Whaea Fenella who tutored our tamariki. They spent countless hours of mahi planning, organising and tutoring the roopu. Special thanks to Whaea Arlette Brown for organising the food fundraisers for our tamariki's hoodies and t-shirts and helping at the noho marae AND a special mihi to Whaea Ashlee DeCaires for taking amazing photos of our tamariki and roopu. Some of these are in this newsletter.
NZEI PUBLIC UNION MEETINGS
Wednesday 23rd November - Kaiako attended NZEI Public Union Meetings at different times on Wednesday. The claims that our NZEI representatives are taking to the government are to:
1. Address widespread understaffing.
2. Value and recognise our kaiako's mahi.
3. Enough time for our kaiako to complete their mahi during work hours.
4. Support kaiako working with high needs students.
5. Greater support for health and safety in schools.
6. Job security for our relievers.
These are real concerns for our kaiako as it does affect our tamariki and their learning. We will continue to keep you updated on our NZEI claims.
LOWER WAIPA ATHLETICS - Friday 25 November
What an awesome day. Our tamariki look MIHARO in their new athletics uniforms and they are doing exceptionally well in their events. A very BIG THANK YOU to those parents who volunteered to help transport tamariki and help at the sprints events. Whanaungatanga at it's best :)
POTIKI ZOO TRIP - Tuesday 29 November
Wow! What a great day our Potiki tamariki had as they embarked to the Hamilton Zoo. Lots of excited tamariki and parents ready to see their animal friends. I saw excited and nervous looks on the tamariki's faces and on their return there were a lot of tired faces. Thank you to our wonderful kaiako for organising this excursion and our awesome parents who helped to awhi and tautoko our tamariki.
TEINA - YR 5&6 KARAKARIKI CAMP - Wednesday 30 November - Friday 2nd December
What an awesome few days our Year 5&6 tamariki had at Karakariki Camp last week. Despite the wind and rain on their first day, the roopu had beautiful weather for the next two days and did lots of fun activities like the Waterfall Swim, Climbing Wall, BMX rides, Swims in the pool, Archery, the Confidence Course, Orienteering and of course two nights of Spotlight.
Our tamariki entertained us in their concert with lots of hidden talents being discovered. I have to say that the teachers and parents skit was hilarious!
Thank you to those parents who are helping at this camp. EOTC events like camps are only possible through the awhi and tautoko of our parents. We appreciate the time you took from your own mahi and whaanau to help our kaiako.
POTIKI ATHLETICS
Yay! Our Potiki kaiako and tamariki did it. This event was held on Friday and there were awesome runners, jumpers and throwers. The tamariki participated in the 50m sprints, the tennis ball throws and long jump. We have lots of budding athletes in our Potiki syndicate. Congratulations to our tamariki who gained 1st, 2nd and 3rd placings in their events. A very BIG congratulations to Rata for winning the Tug o War against the other roopu. Tumeke Rata!
Special thanks to our wonderful kaimahi/teacher aides and kaiako for organising the event.
WAIKATO FULL PRIMARY SCHOOLS ASSOCIATION - 2022 ATHLETICS
Last Thursday 9 of our Year 7&8 tamariki competed at the WFPSA Athletics. There are 82 schools in the WFPSA and the region goes from Taupo, Taumarunui, Kawhia, Raglan, Hamilton, Port Waikato, Hauraki, to Thames and the Coromandel. The WFPSA Athletics championship is a huge event and these students qualified because they gained top placings at the Lower Waipa Athletics. The athletics events were 100m, 200m, 800m, 1500m, shot-put, discus, long jump and high jump.
Our WFPSA Athletics team was:
BOYS
Ezaiah Solomon
Cullen Parai
Mason Ta'ala
Julian Nordstrom
Nela Viliami
GIRLS
Lyon Nordstrom
Mia Christensen
Nevaeh Scirkovich
Liahona Nin
Our tamariki did awesome. Nela and Cullen qualified for the finals in the 100m and 200m sprints. Ezaiah, Liahona, Cullen and Lyon gained 1st, 2nd and 4th placings for their field events as well.
1st place for Year 8 Boys
Ezaiah Solomon was 1st overall for the Year 8 Boys, competing in the 100m, 200m, long jump and high jump. His long jump was 5.4m and he broke the high jump record of 1.62m with a jump of 1.69m.
2nd place for Year 7 Girls
Liahona Nin came 2nd overall for the Year 7 Girls, competing in 800m, 1500m, discus and shot-put. She came 2nd in the two track events and shot-put.
FINALS for 400m Relays
Our girls and boys relay team also qualified for the Yr 8 Relays Finals, which made it extra remarkable because our girls had a Yr 7 runner and our boys had 2 Yr 7 runners.
3rd place overall (150-300)
Overall our school came 3rd for schools that have a student roll of 150-300.
An awesome result for our kura and overall a very successful day. Thank you to our parents who helped with transport and supporting our tamariki.
ENROLMENTS 2023
We are in the midst of planning classes for next year and we are wanting to gauge an approximate number for our New Entrant Class and other year levels for 2023.
If you or someone you know has a child who is starting at Koromatua School or has moved into our area, would you please let Whaea Sue in the office know by emailing enquiries@koromatua.school.nz
We need to know who these students are as soon as possible as it will help us greatly as we plan our classes for 2023.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AT KOROMATUA?
KOROMATUA SCHOOL PTA FUN DAY
Wednesday 7th of December - This FUN event is hosted every year by our wonderful PTA to raise funds for our tamariki. It is a lot of FUN with games, food, activities and if the weather is fine... our very own Koromatua school water slide :)
Tamariki need to bring a towel/togs and shorts for the waterslide.
KOROMATUA SCHOOL BOARD
SCHOOL POLO SHIRTS
Whaea Sue has samples of the polo shirts in various sizes. Tamariki can try them on at kura and purchases are made through myKindo.
Look What We're Up To! 🤩
CELLPHONES
Year 7 or 8 students can bring their cellphone to school to use in emergencies. However they must hand it in to the office before school starts (8:45am) and pick it up again after school (3:00pm). This replaces the procedure of students leaving their cellphones in their bags. Students who do not adhere to this guideline will be asked to leave their cellphones at home for a period of time and their parents will be contacted regarding this matter.
SIGNING TAMARIKI IN OR OUT OF KURA
This is for our tamariki's safety so we know where they are during school hours. Please help us to do so by signing your tamariki IN or OUT.
